The Raydiance Ultrafast Laser PlatformRaydiance has pioneered the use of integrated software control in ultrafast laser technology. Our embedded software architecture and operating system not only makes possible easy, autonomous operation of the laser, but also provides exacting control over all internal laser operations. Through standard Internet connection, the system is capable of remote and real-time servicing as well as preventative maintenance and software upgrades. The open source applications programming interface facilitates ready integration with external applications programs and automated manufacturing environments. Finally, the software operating system adds redundant safety controls such that the laser fails-safe at all times. |
Active Pulse ManagementRaydiance has developed a proprietary Active Pulse Management technology that ensures a reliable, deterministic ultrafast pulse width during ambient temperature changes and varied operating conditions, such as output power. The technology employs integrated software control to continuously monitor and adjust the laser system dispersion so that the laser pulse width remains stable, despite changes in ambient temperature. Active Pulse Management enables for the first time ever a reliable and predictable ultrafast manufacturing tool suitable for industrial settings. Femtoseconds versus Picoseconds: How Short is Short Enough? Whereas both femtosecond and picosecond lasers can initiate optical breakdown, the pulse energy of the latter is spread out over a much longer time period. The longer time period allows energy to diffuse beyond the ablation depth by way of lattice vibrations in the metal atomic structure. The macroscopic side effects of diffusion include less efficient machining as well as thermal damage to the remaining metal. |

Primer on Femtosecond Laser AblationUltrafast light comprises extremely short pulses of light. The brevity of the pulses—generally in the several hundred femtosecond regime—causes the light to interact with matter in a way that is fundamentally different from other forms of energy. This unique interaction enables athermal ablation—the ability to machine micron resolution features in virtually any material without introducing heat to the target. It is a capability that is transforming advanced materials applications. |
